Do You Have A Favorite?

dsc_0164-mediumYou’re reading this and you are like, “of course not!!”, “I would never!!” But you do. Not a favorite in terms of loving more but something about one child you favor over the other.  It is not until you have more than one child that you realize that you could love them equally. Growing up I always thought (and still do) that mom had a favorite- Uncle Khalil. I realize now that he is her favorite because he is the lone boy. She wanted a boy for so long and thought I was one but alas, I wasn’t. So when the boy came, she favored him more, not loved him more.

In the past few weeks since I took to blogging more, so many people have asked if Kennedy is my favorite. I said “no, of course not” But she is!!!! Don’t be shocked by my reply but yes she is hands down my favorite-for now. Kayden is like a tick in M’khai’s butt. He only wants to see me if it involves a snack or turning on Diego downstairs. M’khai really wants to just be left alone in a world of unlimited TV time, Nintendo DS and free reign of the kitchen. Perhaps Rashid would be interested in hanging with me if I were a giant Ipod or if I could just work for him sending out text messages and providing him with meals and drinks at his leisure. Let’s explore the other aspect….getting them dressed. It’s crazy having a mini you in every sense. Kayden is just like his father, he could care less what he has on and lately he has been getting himself so dirty that I do not even bother to get him dressed to the nines anymore. I bought him the cutest Polo slip-ons and they look like he took them off and dragged them by the top through the muddiest swamp. M’khai-please. If I tell M’khai to put on a blue shirt he will give me every reason under the sun as to why he should wear the green one; I can’t win. Oh let’s not forget Rashid, it does not require much clothing to text all day or listen to music so use your imagination as far as his daily attire goes.

Now jump to the princess. I buy everything that I would wear if it came in my size. She loves the camera and she looks so pretty in her clothing. She stays clean because she really has no play clothes so she has no choice to remain prim and proper. When I take out the camera, Kennedy is front and center…Kayden is trying to use my camera to take pictures-not happening….M’khai is always wanting some sort of action shot-”take me coming down the slide”…..oh and Rashid, he is usually texting or listening to the Ipod. How many shots do you take of that before you get bored? But Miss Photogenic, she is a gem and for now she is my favorite. My favorite subject for the camera. She won’t be this age for much longer so you better appreciate it while you can.  The next photos you will probably see are prom and then wedding (I hear it goes that quickly) so for right now I will take as many pictures of her as I possibly can. My favorite subject. My mini me.

  • I took these shots this weekend.
  • Yes there are shots of all of them.
  • Take notice of the action shot of M’khai.
  • Kayden looks pissed because I told him he cannot use my camera.
  • Rashid (when he does take a picture) tries to look like Billy Dee Williams but I didn’t post them to avoid a blackmail situation down the line from one of his friends.
  • The ghetto fabulous look for Kennedy was courtesy of her babysitter; all she needed was some bamboo hoops with her name in them. (this is a joke, please do not buy her any for her birthday)
  • Enjoy!

My hubby and I were just talking about this. We only have one so having favorites is well, cut and dry. But one thing I notice is that “favorite” is not necessarily accurate when it comes to defining a relationship between parent and child. Parents are usually closer to the child that is most like them or needs them more. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you remember that each child has something special to offer. A friend of mine used to say, “I love all my children equally, just differently.”

BEG TO DIFFER….YOU are mom’s favorite…hands down….I have no favorites my children are 8 years apart…very different personalities…they both have game…and i discipline them age appropriate….I have to admit between Kayden and Kennedy …KAYDEN is my favorite…simply because he is not with the fakeism…Kennedy looks like she is a black jacket/white jacket and is just intricately learning to use the camera and use it for ransom or to black mail YOU later in life. She is a road hog and a definite macco…Rashid has always been calm cool and collective …really this is the same dude that at age 4 he tells you to hold on and while you are hanging on for dear life he is in cartoon heaven …what changed!

Hi,
I noticed you were following me on twitter so I decided to visit your blog. We’ve got 4 kids too and yes at times one clearly stands out as the favorite. I love them all equally “just because”…..but there are definitely stages in their lives and blocks of time where I’ve felt more connected to one over the others due to various reasons. They all get their turns being favorite or should I say “most enjoyable to be around” LOL –but they are all loved beyond limits and I couldn’t imagine my life without any one of them. Great Blog!!–You have a beautiful family!

Growing up we knew who the fav was, not cause I was the last meant that I was nor because I was the only girl either. I know my brothers would beg to differ. I vowed when I have children I would never do that cause it sometimes causes riff amongst the siblings when they get older. The thing I’ve noticed is that due to a favorite you tend to think love more. WHY??? I was always closer to my dad not cause I’m a daddy’s girl far from but because I was more like him in characteristics we had so much in common it was like I was him in a female body. As I got older my mom & I devoloped a strange relationship leavingmy brothers even her fav to think I was her favorite NOT. between my kids there isn’t one for me My Essy had me for 14 years without having to share me so we have a tight bond & pretty soon she’ll be off to college & living on her own where favortism wont be a factor, she’ll be driving to Philly to visit her Aunty Iman (without me) or flying to see Aunty Zele. hence she’s growing up. Now with my Bam Bam I can’t get a minute in between the grandparents, the father, & Essence he doesn’t even know me anymore lol… As of today my favorite is both..
